On ‘pragmatics’

On January 19, 2015 by Wolfram Hinzen

It is interesting to see that the claim of a ‘language impairment’ in a proper subgroup of individuals on the autism spectrum is only logically coherent if we conceptually and empirically distinguish between ‘commuication impairment’ and ‘language impairment’, or between ‘pragmatic impairment’ and ‘language impairment’ – since both communication and pragmatic impairments are said to be universal in ASD and a defining feature of it. So what on earth led us to view pragmatics or language-use-in-context not as part of ‘language’?

  • I’ve been enthusiastically following your lab’s blog. Could you please clarify the Un-Cartesian stance on ASD?
    Kind regards
